2017 Resolutions: 6 Month Check In, Part 2

You thought I forgot, but no! Let's review the rest of my 2017 resolutions and see how they're going at the 6 month mark.

6. Eat vegan/vegetarian a majority of the time
I’ve made a lot of progress on this one. At this point, I haven’t personally bought any meat or eggs with my groceries. I’ve been doing pretty well in eating vegan for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. However, I do tend to eat vegetarian (cheese/dairy) in the evenings and occasionally if eating at restaurants. So I guess I’m like 1/2 to 2/3 of the way there.

While it’s very important to me to do as much as I can to minimize animal use/abuse, I am recognizing that it takes time to change diets and a lot of circumstances make eating strictly vegan difficult. There’s been a lot of change in my life this year, and I’m trying not to be too hard on myself for not making a cold-turkey kind of change.

I have, however, been trying a TON of vegan foods and I will be doing some posts on that very soon!

7. Complete reading challenge (see my post on that!)
Ahh. Okay. I’m resolving to do better in the remaining 6 months of the year. I have been reading a lot but not exactly in line with the challenge. Why is this so hard for me?? Honestly, I think it’s because I have limited reading time with work, and when I do have the chance, I cave to what is most interesting at the time instead of what fits a spot on the list. But okay, this is why we do check ins! They can’t all be going great, or that would be too easy, right?

8. Learn to drive (at least get my learner's!)
I have acquired the book. It is in my possession. Finances have prevented me from going any further with this. I have researched driving schools as well, and hope to make more progress on this before year end.

9. Use as many cruelty-free things as possible
All right, one that’s going amazingly well! I have not purchased ANY cosmetics/personal care products that are not cruelty-free AND vegan in 2017. I also did a no-buy for cosmetics/clothes during Lent. In some ways, it started out rough, as I had to leave behind some things I loved. But mostly it’s helped me cut back on buying this stuff (as there’s fewer things that fit my specifications) and I’ve found other things that I love even more. Plus, my skin is happier. Expect a few posts on CF and V products coming soon.

10. Take vitamins/minerals and drink water
I’m doing well with this, taking multivitamins (with B12) and greens (chlorophyll, and a little extra iron). I’ve had to drop Omega 3s for the time being because no one sells vegan ones in store (even flax/algae derived ones have gelatin capsules! Sigh). I have found some to order online, so I hope to do that soon. Because my diet is a little all over the place right now, I feel much better knowing I’m getting at least basic nutrients in this way.

I’ve also been researching CoQ10 (helps prevent migraines) and GABA (not a daily supplement, but helps with mood, especially during that time of the month), so I’d like to try those in the near future.

I have a tumbler for water at work and I’ve been getting 1-2 of those in a day, which is also great. The consistent hydration has helped prevent afternoon headaches, especially.

11. Make my own wine and/or cider
Hmm, so I initially thought this would be a money-saving technique, but it turns out that my finances have been such that almost no money has been available for alcohol, whether from the store or handmade. And as I haven’t been consuming much alcohol at all, I’m thinking I will change this resolution out. (Can I do that? Apparently yes.)

The idea behind this resolution was to do something that would be creative and involve learning new skills. Something else I’ve wanted to learn is sewing, and I'd also like to have actual instruction in guitar. I’ve been researching some options for classes, and I would love to pursue one or both of these in the rest of the year.

12. Regularly assess goals
Hey, hey! We’re doing it. *check* But seriously, looking back on these halfway through the year has been great. It’s nice to see progress, but also good to reassess before the year’s over. See you in December for the final roundup. 😊
