The Closet Tag

As the “how to shop/organize a closet” has been done to death (including by me!), I was happy to come across this tag. I find these questions really interesting, and kind of want everyone else to answer them, too. I’ll be including pictures of each item for a more immersive experience. For background, I work in a business casual environment, so I have some pieces that fit that, but my personal aesthetic is gender-neutral, queer, athleisure nerd.

The Closet Tag

*still no Narnia

1. What is the oldest item in your wardrobe/closet?
I have a pair of workout shorts from Wal-Mart that I believe date back to high school. They’re just a basic black with tie waist but they’ve been my go to for “I’m sick/sad/hot/just need to be wearing clothes technically but don’t want to feel them on my body” days. Actually, just in the last week or so the seams have started to fray, so they’re not long for this world.

2. What is the newest item?
Newest “new” item is pair of black dress shorts with zipper detail. These were bought for work purposes. Newest thrifted item is a pair of super loose, comfy jeans that I may or may not cut off into shorts. Very “Paint Dad” aesthetic.

3. What is the most expensive item?
I have a slouchy, black and white rollneck wool sweater from Urban Outfitters that I believe was about $100.

4. What was the biggest bargain?
I got a light cropped denim jacket from the brand Junarose which retailed for ~$120. I got it at Winners for $20.

5. What was the biggest waste of money?
Ugh, leggings in general. I’ve had 3 pairs utterly disintegrate in the wash in the last couple months (and I wash gentle, cold, and low heat or air dry). The problem is so dire that I’ve actually been forced to buy Real Pants™ because I refuse to humour clothes that can’t even keep it together anymore. The picture for this entry is my literal trashcan with leggings in it.

6. What is the most affordable/cheapest item (that you use a lot)?
I have two striped tunic shirts from Old Navy (one burgundy, one mustard) that I wear all the time. They’re my “today sucks but at least I can count on this to work” shirts.

7. What are your 3 favorite items right now?
a)    Striped/dotted tees.
b)    Masculine dress/boat shoes.
c)     Scarves.

8. What is your favourite piece that you’ve gotten as a gift?
Definitely my Lightning Fast VCR Repair t-shirt from Joe. It’s Red Letter Media merch but also just delightfully dated even if you don’t get the reference.

9. What is the most comfortable item?
For loungewear, I have a pair of joggers with stripes and pink cuffs that are like wearing clouds. For actual clothing, I’ve got a red/white plaid button down that is just the coziest.

10. What is the most outrageous/colorful item in your closet (that you absolutely love)?
For colourful, I have a rainbow button down that I wear to Pride every year. For outrageous, I guess I’d say my jumpsuit from ASOS. It’s black, but the cut of it is basically right on the line between edgy, draped hotness and literal giant baby.

11. What is the most uncomfortable item that you still wear a lot?
Maybe not a typical pick, but my bras. I wear sports bras for the purposes of binding, so they are not strictly comfortable. I vastly prefer it to the alternative, though.

12. Where do you shop the most?
In person, Winners. Online, ASOS and Boohoo. And Value Village (though I/my wallet seriously miss actual thrift stores).

13. Pick your favourite white item.
I've got a high/low sweater with elbow patches that is more cream/space dye, but it’s the closest to white that I own. Also, not pictured, but I love white socks and have way too many of them.

14. What's something you love but everyone else hates?
Let me preface this by saying, I’m not actually sure people hate these, but I imagine they might. One is my pair of harem pants, which I effing love for the Edge™ factor, but I could see people deeming “unflattering”. The other is my Best Dressed sweatshirt. It’s literally just a grey sweater with the words “Best Dressed” on it. I’ve had a few funny looks when I wear it, but it’s the perfect blend of like “I know how to dress, but also how to make weird vague jokes.”

15. Share an outfit that you’re excited to wear soon.
Denim shorts, patterned loose tunic tee, flip flops! It hasn’t been warm enough for these yet.
